The doctors who work in HOSPIDENT have dedicated their professional lives to improving the comfort and dental health of those who seek their care. It is our sincere belief that our patients have the right to be thoroughly examined and diagnosed in order to determine the nature and cause of their discomfort and concern.

Endodontists are dentists with special training in endodontic procedures. They do only endodontic in their practices because they dedicated two more years of studies after they finish the dental school, that’s why are specialists in this specific area.

Each tooth has its own nervous and vascular system known as a pulp. For a variety of reasons the pulps of teeth may become infected with bacteria usually as a result of tooth decay or injury. Because the pulp is in a confined space its ability to overcome infection is limited and it is destroyed. Eventually an abscess forms in the pulp canal and spreads to the surrounding tissues with consequent pain and swelling.

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. Signs of pulp damage include pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, discoloration of the tooth, swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums. Sometimes, there are no symptoms.

This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need of dental implants or bridges. This procedure will be performed using local anesthesia.

The endodontist removes the inflamed or infected pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the inside of the tooth, then fills and seals the space.

Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may be slightly tender for several days as a result of manipulation during treatment and previous condition of your tooth. This tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm. Discomfort may be alleviated by taking ibuprofen (Advil), aspirin, or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed.

Endodontic treatment has now been completed. The root canal system has been permanently sealed. However, the outer surface is sealed with a temporary restoration. A follow-up restoration must be placed to protect your tooth against fracture and decay.

When the pulp of a tooth is damaged, the only alternative to endodontic treatment is extraction of the tooth. To restore chewing function and to prevent adjacent teeth from shifting, the extracted tooth must be replaced with an implant or bridge. This requires surgery or dental procedures on adjacent healthy teeth and can be far more costly and time-consuming than endodontic treatment and restoration of the natural tooth.
